Tree Pruning

Pruning is a practice that is periodically required on all woody landscape plants.

Tree pruning and tree management takes many different forms depending on the particular situation and requirements of the landowner. Regular tree management maintains the health of the tree and provides a more distinct environment. Recommended works will depend on many factors including whether there are any nearby hazards, evidence of decay or disease, species etc.

On mature trees, pruning is required to remove dead and dying branches to maintain health and safety. This pruning type is referred to as deadwooding or cleaning.

While many trees will naturally form their adult shape as they grow, others need a little assistance to create a clear trunk and a well-spaced canopy of branches. It is wise to keep an eye on young trees and carry out formative pruning as required.

Pruning of deciduous trees (those that lose their leaves in winter) is often best carried out in winter, as it is easier to see the branch structure and promotes fast regrowth in spring, as most trees are dormant in winter.

Evergreen trees can be pruned all year round.

A tree's response to pruning depends on many factors, so a Summit Trees arboriculturalist will carry out a careful examination of the tree to assess the best course of action.
